susan difluri.
As a child, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d say, “I want to be an artist or an art teacher.” In some way, we’re all artists creating our lives…, and I created fulfilling careers in occupational therapy and in music performance knowing that one day I would return to that childhood quest to be a visual artist.
It is said that ‘when the student is ready, the teacher arrives’. In anticipation of retiring from a long career as an occupational therapist, I began studying art with Jay Davenport in August 2019, not long after he had opened his studio in Lehighton. Though I have briefly studied a while back with watercolor under the guidance of regional artist Andrew Kish III, I work mostly in the mediums of charcoals and pastel pencils and am currently practicing and honing my skill in the use of oil painting under the mentoring of Jay Davenport.
My mother, later in her life noted that she always wanted to be able to 'sit in nature and paint what she sees'. She passed in 2015, and I hold her unfulfilled legacy in my heart. Creating art has become my new passion. I hope you enjoy some of the paintings that you see here.
